The new buzz word in the massage and medical fields is FASCIA also known as connective tissue.
Fascia is the sticky collagen based substance that holds us together, and as the name suggest connects us from head to toe, back to front and left to right. It does not sound interesting or even inspires a second thought, until you start exploring this wonderful tissue.
Fascia is so much stronger than muscle and holds ten times more nerve endings than muscle. Therefore, if we only look at the muscular system when we are treating an injury we will surely have a hard time fixing the problem. Because fascia is all connective but but does not attach itself to bone like muscles do it reacts like a tensegrity model, meaning, what ever happens in one part of the body will consequently have an effect on another part of the same body.
In saying that consider injuries like, plantar faciitis, a condition where the tendons underneath the foot becomes very tight and painful, if your back or legs are tight it will directly effect your feet and only considering the foot might mean a much longer healing process.
The same goes for migraines, all migraines are said to stem from either food or stress, but what about those that you just can't find a cure for, ever considered the fascia's roll in it?
So, next time a pain suddenly appear, seemingly coming from nowhere, remember the fascia system and all the winding and twisting it goes through everyday.
Look after your super suit and it will look after you.
