Myofascial Release

What is it?

Our Fascial system can be liken to a living organism within our bodies. It has the ability to make decisions, and react as it feels fit without the direct input of the brain. Fascia became a buzz word in modern medicine and there are more and more information around it. After 20 years of working with clients and myself here is what I believe.

What does fascia mean to me

Fascia or connective tissue, as some of us know it, does EXACTLY what we need from it, it is intuitive, interactive, controlling and playful. If we treat it right and with respect it responds in the same manner. It is incredibly strong and can be our best ally or feel like our worst enemy.

Treat it with respect, in other words, move it often, in as many directions and in as many different environments as possible. Move it fast and move it slow, and fascia will respond by staying hydrated, strong and bouncy. Movement is not a choice it is a necessity.

It's when we grow up to fit in and look, do and behave like your average human adult that things start going wrong. When we leave the playful era of childhood, we "naturally" move less (please note I did not say exercise), play less or never at all, we become stagnant behind a desk or repeat the same movements 100 times a day because it is required by our job or life situation. Once again our faithful fascia gets called into action and steps in to do the job at hand, we can all attest to the amazing job it does. It's sole purpose is to respond to our every day requests, if we sit all day it will overtime respond to the pressure and posture of a seated position, and do its best to make us as strong as possible in that position, meaning our fascia system will make us into the best "sitters" we can be! But, if we become the best at sitting, it's rather difficult to be the best at something opposite like standing or walking, do you agree? The same is true that it is near impossible to be a world champion in the 100m sprint AND a marathon at the same time. So, to be a healthy, adapted injury-free human being all we need to do is to be capable in every single movement we can imagine....EASY! (see Movement Matters to discover how we do that)

How we treat the fascia

There are many different layers to fascia. We start with the deepest layer, the layer that connects the muscles to the skeleton. This layer is highly impacted by lifestyle, age, stress, food and repetitive movement. This layer causes the seemingly unexplainable injuries that just "appears" over night and seems to linger for ever.

After that we move toward the more superficial fascia. These layers run between muscles and just under the skin, they are more affected by and impact, like a fall or a sudden movement.

Massage & Lymphatic drainage

When we become super good at sitting, gardening or any position where we are stationary for long periods, it becomes quite difficult to "snap" ourselves out of that position. If it's you vs protective fascia...Fascia will win every day. And, that is where fascia release massage comes in. Sometimes we all need a little help from our friends. MFRM (Myofascial release massage) comes in various methods and modalities but we all aim to help hydrate and realign your connective tissue again. Tight fascia = overworked muscles = injuries. Tight fascia = movement compensation = impaired neuro messaging. Tight fascia = restricted fluid (lymph & blood) flow = illnesses
Look after EVERY system in your body.
